Self-Love: brought to you by Female Artists

March is Women’s History Month, and the perfect time to celebrate the hardworking, sexism fighting, women of our generation. Popular music has historically been a male dominated sphere, and female artists are often over-looked and under-represented. The Annenberg Inclusion Initiative at USC conducted a study showing that out of 600 popular songs to debut in 2017, only 16.8% included female artists; and these trends have continued into 2018. Take the Billboard top 100 for this week: 4 out of the top 10 songs include female artists, none of which are solo tracks. Two of the songs, ‘Meant to Be’, by Bebe Rexha, and ‘Havana’, by Camila Cabello, are tracks from female created albums, both of which include male features. The other two songs, ‘Finesse (Remix)’, by Bruno Mars, and ‘The Middle’, by Zedd, only feature female artists. Women in the music industry often act as objects of entertainment, having their appearances, fashion decisions, and personal life, scrutinized in ways that male artists do not experience. Female artists with self-love agendas are especially demonized, seeing as self-love has adopted a negative connotation within female created arts. This post is dedicated to the badass women of the music industry; to those who use their music to spread messages of self-love, gender-role resistance, and inclusivity, to all women everywhere.
